Successfully creating the industrial township of Jurong was a daunting and strategic journey. Initially dubbed “Goh’s Folly” by contemporary academics in response to then Finance Minister Goh Keng Swee’s industrialisation move in the late 1950s, Jurong gradually grew to become the largest free trade and export processing zone in Southeast Asia.

Gain deeper insights into the early history of the area such as its first mention in maps, its natural heritage and early settlements, before the concerted industrialisation drive to push Jurong open for business. This gave rise to iconic buildings of in Jurong such as the former Jurong Town Hall, Jurong Bird Park and Singapore Science Centre, which were built with the intention to support its industrial growth. Hear from the people who lived and worked in the thriving estate, as well as its significance in Singapore’s history.
