Didn't catch enough of these well-loved installations at Jurong in November 2017? Swing by the Jurong Town Hall this SHF to catch two of these fun installations - One Cubic Jurong & Song Song Gao Jurong - again! Join the artists in trying to form a perfect ‘Jurong’ cube at 6pm each night, and print a selection of fun Singlish phrases on tote bags in a typography workshop at 7pm on the weekend.

One Cubic Jurong by Yeo Chee Kiong invites 16 participants to stand on a blue platform of a Chinese Calligraphic character ‘prosperous’ (pronounced as ‘Yu’, which is also the first of the two Chinese characters of Jurong <<裕廊>>, to form a “perfect” cube by trying to achieve “equality” through negotiating their standing heights.

Song Song Gao Jurong is a Singlish catchphrase commonly known to many older Singaporeans, including Malays and Indians. Literally, it means ‘feeling satisfied until one arrives at Jurong’. As part of Vertical Submarine’s Hokkien Rhyme project, we would like to shout out this phrase for the later generations of Singaporeans.

One Cubic Jurong and Song Song Gao Jurong was first commissioned as part of the Larger Than Life: The Unspoken Histories of Jurong Neighbourhood public art showcase by the Public Art Trust in partnership with the National Arts Council's Arts In Your Neighbourhood programme.

Yeo Chee Kiong (b.1970) is a contemporary sculptor and installation artist who is fascinated with the language and spatial relationship between object, space and authorship. His work destabilises the familiar notions of spatial proportions and perspectives, whist examining the human conditions in the construction of an extended surreal world.
