8 PM - 8.30 PM
Hup Yick Engineering

Step into the last remaining auto part machining workshop in this old car-repair district of Jalan Besar and listen to the stories that were uncovered by the editors during the two-year research for the book The Machinist. From the repairing culture of yesteryears to creating jewellery from obsolete auto parts, design-artist Xin Xiaochang and jewellery designer Yuki Mitsuyasu will share their journey of how they came to collaborate with auto parts machinist Mr Yee Chin Hoon and the pearls of wisdom they gleaned from trades of old.

This short sharing (30mins) by the book editors will begin with the screening of short film “In the workshop” and end with a demonstration of the lathing process by the machinist Mr Yee.

About The Machinist project
Through the lens of design, the book 'The Machinist' documents the stories of a lathe machinist and his community in the auto and ship repair district of Jalan Besar. Oral transcripts and architectural drawings lend a glimpse into their tales of labour and communal spirit. We learn how they come to deddicate their entire lives to mastering a skill, and question the meaning of craft in a rapidly chaning urban context.
